The President's Corner --- June 2009
JUNE, 2009 NAGE Local Executive Officers would like to extend our sincerest congratulations to all individuals who graduated this year. We only hope the best as you pursue your goals in life. A few weeks ago, your local officers attended a Senate committee hearing to revise the Title 38 U.S.C section 7422. This law limits the bargaining rights of the medical professionals such as the Registered Nurses when the issue arises concerning professional conduct and competency. VA management has interpreted this law broadly and basically has taken away the bargaining rights of the Title 38 employees. NAGE together with the other federal unions submitted our position letter to the Senate Committee. Although the issue did not reach the entire Senate for debate, NAGE will continue to pursue it. VAMHCS implemented the electronic self scheduling and being piloted at various units in Baltimore and Perry Point. NAGE is only hoping that this will improve the quality of care to the veterans and satisfaction to our nurses. Nursing Service started their journey to magnet status this month. MAYBE….. and I mean maybe there will be some changes to some issues that NAGE has been concerned and effects our veterans and the working conditions of the nurses. I would like to sign off by wishing everyone a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable summer. Evelyn »
