What is Happening Around the BRECC
The Loch Raven CBOC/Home Base and BRECC continue to grow fast and becoming one of the busiest centers of the VAMHCS. This campus currently serves veterans from all over the nation. Offering services such as rehabilitation, medicine, sub acute care, geriatrics, home base visits and out patients clinics. Now, the out patient clinic is expanding since its activation back in November 2006. With the new addition completed in February 2008 and the second phase of this project that has began with renovation of the former clinic and to be completed in June 2008. The entire CBOC is expected to be fully open in July 2008. With the new addition, mental Health is expected the new hiring for two professional nurses. We hope that these new nurses will become part of our NAGE family at this site. Our NAGE members have contributed to the success of this transition. Members from all three divisions at this campus are busy providing an excellent care to all the veterans at this campus as well as the home visit. Another change happing at this campus is the planning for the construction of a new state of the art, Research Building to be constructed close to the existing CBOC Building. With these new additions to the Loch Raven Campus, parking will be an issue. NAGE held a meeting with the administration, Mr. Smith and Mr. Garfunkel to address the concerns. NAGE felt that safety for our members as well as patients and their family is important and parking outside the VA premises will put all in risk to become crime victims. Recent police report, an increase of crime in this area. VA officials approve the construction of a new gravel parking in the back of CBOC clinic for a 50 spaces. In other hand BRECC members continue experiencing lots of changes. Some of our members are participating in a new initiative to improve their working area. This new initiative is known for their acronym, CREW (Civility, Respect, Empowerment in Work place). This initiative allows their members from all different areas, example nursing, pharmacy, EMS, and other to have the opportunity to talk about their role, work and how to create a better environment. Their created ideas and recommendations will be submitted not only to the VISN but the high up administration of VA. Other changes occurring at BRECC site is the implementation of a new management team (second time around). BRECC would have now an administrator for the whole campus, Mr. Steve Armagon. Also would have a new acting associate chief nurse, Ms. Sigrid Andrew, she will remain on this position from approximate 3-6 month until a new associate chief for extended care is hire. In the past BRECC has been the talk of the town, having negative connotations. NAGE hopes that with these recent changes will create a better work place in which our members will feel appreciated for their effort and service provided to those who have given part of their life for this country. »
